Digital competences? Polish companies must catch up

We have nothing to be ashamed of when it comes to the digitization of public services. We are one of the EU leaders in online access to medical recordsj. We also have good infrastructure. In 2024, 95.9 percent Households had internet access, and our fixed connectivity range exceeds the EU average.
The problem begins when we look at the companies. We have access to modern infrastructure and digital services, but the business remains behind. According to the CSO data, it shows that Only 5.9 percent enterprises indeed implements AI solutions. 66.8 percent companies is characterized by low and very low levels of digital maturity.
Digital transformation: Two speed business
– In Poland we are starting with a very low ceiling – comments Anna Barbachowska, director of HR at ADP Polska. – This can be translated in different ways. Public investments in digital technologies and research and innovations are at a fairly low level in Polandespecially compared to some European countries (Finland, Germany, Denmark). In addition Few companies invest in technologies in advance.
The expert adds that the implementation of artificial intelligence solutions is a rather complicated and expensive process. In small companies The main barrier is the costin large, long implementation new solutions, related to the ripping of the old and new system and training a large number of employees.
– Companies often don't know how to prepare for it. As a result, we have two speed businesses. Example? In large HR companies, most recruitment processes are already automated and use AI, searching for candidates from which the employer requires digital competences, but these competences are not fully used, because the company cannot manage them effectively. In the logistics industry we have digitally managing fleet, couriers and orders, as well as those in which the basic tool is a telephone and e -mail – explains Anna Barbachowska.
Technology will not help if we do not know how to use it
According to the estimates of the World Economic Forum, over the next few years over 40 percent. competence will be out of date. Meanwhile Many companies focus on buying tools, forgetting that the implementation of AI is a process that requires a change in mentality, communication and work structure.
According to the CSO data, it shows that Only 22.3 percent Poles have secondary digital competences. There is a lack of training inside companies, both before and after the technology implementation. New employees often do not have access to onboarding programs based on digital tools. They also do not know how to move in an environment that is changing dynamically.
How to improve employees' digital skills?
– When the company implements a specific solution, it is necessary to train – individual or group, online or stationary. The training should leave time For thorough overtraining of various actions, learning different options and paths of conduct, to ask questions. After implementation, there should still be a science path for new employees. This may be, for example, a program mentoring or e-learning platform – emphasizes Anna Barbachowska.
According to the expert, they also give a good effect workshopsduring which employees solve a problem together or train one skill. – It can be, for example, writing prompts. Participants will learn the principles of “conversation” with AI chatbots, then compare the obtained answers and possibilities of various language models. In this way they learn to improve their skills, which works very well in the group – he explains.
How to take care of your own development of digital competences?
Employees, even if they cannot count on the support of the organization, should explore the available tools themselves, compare the effects and share knowledge.
– We learn to use AI as we once learned to move on the Internet, use graphic programs or Excel – says Barbachowska. – Knowledge of one program later made it easier to move in another, even those serving to a completely different goal. In many cases, we studied on our own, at other times we used professional trainings, but the skill was shaped by repeating. It will be similar with artificial intelligence. The use of widely available programs trains our “intuitiveness” and smoothly moving around the systemwhich will be useful in using specific tools present in a given company.
No technology will work without investing in people. However, the advantage is not built by the tool, but those who can use them. Digital solutions change the labor market. If we do not learn to use them, we will lose not only competitiveness, but also an impact on the direction of changes. And this is much more than just a matter of innovation.
