This episode also became a serious warning: even during the war Ukraine cannot afford hesitation in its commitment to transparency, responsibility and the rule of law. It was never just a bureaucratic reorganization. It was a matter of national security.
Undermining institutions such as the National Anti -Corruption Bureau (NAB), a special anti -corruption prosecutor's office (SAP), or the National Corruption Agency (NACP) not only weakens supervision, but also threatens to redirect key resources from the front line. Corruption during the war is not an abstract theory: each incorrectly used hryid means one drone less, one bulletproof vest less, one delay in the reconstruction of bombed houses. Anti -corruption bodies are not a luxury during the war. They are a rescue rope.
The international reaction clearly showed that the reforms are not optional. Ukrainian allies in the European Union, G7 and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) showed unprecedented generosity, but not blind loyalty. Their support has always been related to democratic resistance and institutional reforms. In the face of a long war, Kyiv cannot afford to expose these rescue lines. Delays in financing or breaking agreements from the IMF would cost Ukraine not only money, but also trust.
The reaction of the public was fast and justified. Ukrainians devoted too much to accept even the smallest signs of returning to the past. The memory of the Maidan, the courage of signalists and the daily work of social reformers are a testimony to the fact that society demands responsibility – even during the war. Protests and petitions were not a distraction from hostilities – they were their important part.

And as always, the only person enjoying the weakening of the institution was Vladimir Putin. Every manifestation of Kiev's democratic retreat is immediately used by the Kremlin.
It must be a turning point
President Zelanski now has a second chance – and should use it. His decision to restore the independence of anti -corruption institutions is the victory of Ukrainian democracy. But that's not enough. If reforms are needed, let them be specific, transparent and inclusive. The solution for several weak system points is not to dismantle the entire structure, but to strengthen what works and fix what does not work.

Ukrainians participate in protest against the reduction of the autonomy of anti -corruption organs, Kiev, July 23, 2025.
This moment must be a turning point, not just a temporary withdrawal. Ukraine cannot afford to return to reforms of fake or behind -the -scenes compromises.
It's not just about corruption. It's about dignity, credibility and identity. It is about proving soldiers on the front, citizens rebuilding their lives and allies around the world, that Ukraine is not only worth defending, but also capable of becoming what she has always sought: a free, just and democratic European state.
The war with Russia is a struggle for sovereignty. The fight against corruption is a fight for dignity. Ukraine must win both.
