Huge purchase. Carrefour leaves one of the largest countries in Europe: over 1000 shops sold

The French group Carrefour, the largest retailer in Europe, announced on Thursday night that it has reached an agreement on the sale of Italian operations to the food and drinks manufacturer Newprips, Reuters, quoted by Agerpres.
The sale of Carrefour Italy, which operates 1,188 stores, but which last year registered operational losses worth 67 million euros, will boost Carrefour profitability, the French group said in a press release.
The financial director of Carrefour, Matthieu Malige, informed that the sale of operations in Italy will be done at a “symbolic price”, mentioning the important losses of this division that made a turnover of 4.2 billion euros, about 4% of the turnover of the entire group.
Separately, Carrefour informed that he made a net profit of 210 million euros in the first quarter, down 33% at an annual rate, even though the group's turnover increased by 3.7% to 46.56 billion euros.
“Carrefour business recorded a clear acceleration in the first half of 2025, driven by the advance registered in the three main countries: France, Spain and Brazil,” said the general manager of Carrefour, Alexandre Bompard.
In this context, the Carrefour Board of Directors has decided to renew the mandate of Alexandre Bompard, which runs Carrefour from 2017, until 2026.
In Romania, the Carrefour group has 341 stores of which 37 “Carrefour” hypermarkets, 262 supermarkets (221 stores “Market” and 41 “Express Orange”), 42 “Express” proximity stores, 8 “contact” and an online store.
