Eugen Mihăescu, honorary member of the Romanian Academy, wrote, after Sunday's protest in support of Călin Georgescu, a text that is based on false information that a gendarmer has intentionally stepped on the flag of Romania. About the scene referred to, the Romanian Gendarmerie said that “a photo is presented, extracted from a video clip, especially to leave the impression that a gendarmerie intentionally treads the national flag of Romania.” In a statement, the institution said that “the public is trying to handle and inoculate feelings against the gendarmes.”

Who is Eugen Mihăescu

Mihăescu, 88 years old, is an honorary member of the Romanian Academy, after an activity of painter, graphic designer, writer and politician. He has been a member of the 1993 Academy. He was elected senator, in the Romanian Parliament, on the lists of the Party Greater and vice-president of the Senate Foreign Policy Commission, in the 2004-2008 legislature.

Eugen Mihăescu is also one of those who have publicly expressed against the acceptance of the writer Mircea Cărtărescu in the Romanian Academy, in February, according to G4Media.

Acad. Eugen Mihăescu: I walk on the internet and I saw a video. A video is hard to handle. How old are you?

– It's not important.
– I entered the press at 20 years old. This happened at the first issue of “student life”, which appeared in 1955. So, we have been counting since I was in the press. Then, I made a magazine, I worked on “Luceafărul”, I made drawings for “Literary Gazette”, “Contemporary”. Taking advantage of a moment when the door was open, in 1967, I slipped and left (from the country, no). I did a site work, I was kicked out of college before I finished college. Abroad I worked only for the very serious press.

– But now we are talking about this false image …
-I would not have prepared to make a fake. My dear, when I saw the video on the Internet and studied it, I realized it couldn't be a fake news. And, in the crap they make with the false choices, it would have been better to be more fake-down. That they have falsified their lives. The whole life is forged. I care a little at 88, I still have my whole mind. It also surprises me that I still go on two legs, especially after someone hugged me over a scooter and I broke my hip. I do not want to say that I have suffered an attack. I am nobody. Than an artist.

– But the image is false …
-I shocked me what I saw there. And I wrote with my heart, not with my hand.

– The gendarmerie says that the image is manipulated, it is removed from the context. It didn't happen. You are a representative of the Romanian Academy. However, according to the Gendarmerie, you spread false information on the Internet.
– The gendarmerie spreads false information. The gendarmerie should have analyzed the young man and tell him that he should, as I say in the article, lift the flag and kiss him. I had a right to reply and appeared (also on the website Activenews.ro, no). Not that I have been an academic since 1993, since the president of the Academy was not an academic. I did not make this comment on behalf of the institution, but on my behalf. I saw something, I studied what I see very well, and I realized that it was not a bitch. The Romanian Gendarmerie and the “militiaman” who leads the ministry will count.

– What do you mean?

The president of the Academy says he has nothing to do, although he “denigrated the institution several times”

HotNews.ro asked the president of the Romanian Academy, Ioan Aurel Pop, if the institution he runs has the necessary tools to avoid, in the future, that its members will spread false information and what repercussions may exist after this episode. “Unfortunately, the Academy has no such tools,” said Ioan Aurel Pop.

The president of the Academy, however, admits the repeated slippages of Eugen Mihăescu: “His reign has denigrated our institution several times, he had skids from the status of the Academy, he challenged the Honor Council (a kind of ethics commission), etc. He was taken by certain means of mass broadcasting, although we have not been protected. The institution does not respect the status of the academy, ”said Ioan Aurel Pop.

Ioan Aurel Pop says he cannot be sanctioned because the status of the institution he runs does not allow him to do so. “Mr. Eugen Mihăescu is a member of the Romanian Academy, but he is not an academic. According to the law, exclusively the titular members have the right to carry the title of academic,” explained Ioan Aurel Pop.
