Felix Baumgartner died in the impact, following the fracture of the spine in the lumbar area and of the spinal cord damage, according to the first conclusions of the autopsy. The investigators take into account the hypothesis that the accident was caused by a poorly fixed video camera, which would have been detached during the flight and would have been aspirated by the propeller of the motorized paradise, causing the collapse, notes the Daily Mail.
Prosecutor Raffaele Iannella, who leads the investigation into the death of Felix Baumgartner, told BID that an autopsy at the Institute of Legal Medicine within the Ferm Hospital is currently performed.
“What we know with certainty so far is that Baumgartner died on the spot, following a violent impact. The spine was fractured in the lumbar area, and the spinal cord was affected,” he said.
The local press reports that the accident was caused by an unexpected incident during the flight.
The investigators suspect that a video camera mounted on the Baumgartner's motor paragliding would have been detached and would have been aspirated by the propellers, causing its destruction.
Authorities are now trying to recover the room to accurately reconstruct the accident.
The Prosecutor's Office in Italy said that the investigation could last between 40 and 45 days until completion.
The main suspicion of the doctors was that Baumgartner suffered a cardiac arrest and thus lost control of the paraglider. At the same time, according to the findings made by the carabinieri investigating the case, Baumgartner would not have asked for help during the flight, thus suspecting that he suffered a cardiac arrest in the air and lost control over the paraglider.
Mihaela Rădulescu filmed it while taking off in the flight in which she died
The announcement comes after the partner of Felix Baumgartner, Mihaela Rădulescu, published on the X network disturbing images captured just minutes before the accident, stating that he did not know, when the filming, that he would be “the last flight in his extraordinary life.”
“For over 12 years I have been with him at every take -off and landing – from parachuting, paragliding flights, helicopter, paramotor or in acrobatics shows. And when I could not be present at some helicopter flights, I had the WLC code – 'Wifey Landing Call.”
Describing him as “truly special”, she added that “now she returns home, up there, where she was the happiest.”
At the age of 55, Mihaela Rădulescu thanked those who gave her support these days and contributing to “keeping her unique heritage.”
Felix Baumgartner became known worldwide in 2012, after jumping from the stratosphere in what was considered the most extreme jump with the parachute in history.
