Arrested for espionage in Russia: a young man from the Republic of Moldova, accused of working for Ukrainian services

A young man born in the Republic of Moldova, but a citizen of the Russian Federation, was arrested by the Federal Security Service (FSB) in the city of Riazan, under the charge of spying in favor of Ukraine. The Moscow state press claims that it would have collected information on the Russian military industry and would have sent them to Ukrainian intelligence services.
According to a statement issued by the FSB, “A citizen of the Russian Federation born in 2001, originally from the Republic of Moldova, involved in information collection activities in the interest of the main information direction of the Ministry of Defense (GUR), was detained on the territory of Riazan ”.
The Russian secret services also claim that the young “acting at the instructions of his responsible, collected and transferred information to Ukrainian information services On one of the units of the armed forces of the Russian Federation and on a Defense Industry in the Riazan region”.
Coordinated by Telegram and evacuation promises to France
The investigators say that the suspect was coordinated through the Telegram app and that he would have been directly related to a representative of the Ukrainian secret services. According to the Russian authorities, “During the operative search activities, it was established that the suspect, in 2024, through the Telegram messenger, set up and maintain the contact with a representative of the Ukrainian Intelligence Service.”.
In exchange for the information provided, the young man would have been promised to support the territory of the Russian Federation and arrive in France, NATO member state. Russian prosecutors claim that he would later enter a “Ukrainian armed formation forbidden in the Russian Federation“, Where they would have participated in the fights against Russian forces,”During a special military operation”.
Other Moldovans accused of espionage
This is not the first accusation of this kind to Moldovan citizens. In June, the FSB announced the detention of two alleged spies in the Republic of Moldova, which he claimed would have been directly coordinated by the Chisinau Intelligence and Security Service (SIS). The information was also broadcast by the Russian state press.
In this tense context, the Chisinau authorities issued a travel warning for Moldovan citizens who intend to travel to the Russian Federation.
