The tax discount package proposed by President Donald Trump passed on Thursday the last obstacle in the American Congress, after the representatives of the representatives, controlled by the Republicans, approved the legislative project and sent for promulgation, according to Reuters. The president will promulgate the law on Friday, the White House announced.
The “Great and Beautiful Law” (One Big Beautiful Bill Act) represents an important victory for the Republican President, which will thus be able to finance the harsh measures against immigration, to constantly turn the 2017 tax reductions, the main legislative achievement during his first mandate, and to grant new tax facilities, as he promised 2024.
The draft law also provides for cutting of health and food assistance programs, eliminating dozens of incentives for green energy.
According to the Congress Budget (an independent institution), the measure would add $ 3,400 billion to the national debt, which currently amounts to 36,200 billion.
Despite the concerns about the costs of the project – which has 869 pages – and the impact on the health system, most of the Republicans supported the law, only two of the 220 Republican members of the Chamber voting against. The document had already been adopted in the Senate, also at the limit, where the Republicans hold control.
Republicans claim that the law will reduce taxes for Americans from all income categories and stimulate economic growth.
The Republican representative Virginia Foxx, from North Carolina, described the draft law as bringing “a historical reduction in taxes for working families, massive investments for securing the country, generations savings and eliminating waste, fraud and abuses from government programs, for them to function more efficiently.”
All democratic parliamentarians voted against, criticizing the project as a gift for the rich, who will leave millions of people without medical insurance.
“The purpose of this project, justifying for all the cuts that will affect the ordinary Americans, is to provide huge tax reductions to the billionaires,” said the Democratic leader in the Chamber of Representatives, Hakeem Jeffries, in an eight-hour speech-the longest in the history of the room.
Donald Trump has maintained the pressure throughout the legislative process, alternating between insistence and threats, in the attempt to convince Congressmen to send him the law for promulgation until the July 4 feast.
The Republicans rushed to respect this term, working on the weekend and organizing marraton debates, overnight, both in the room of representatives and in the Senate. The draft law was adopted in the Senate on Tuesday, with 51 votes at 50, JD Vance Vice President expressing the decisive vote.
