The vegetation fires that ravaged for three days on the Greek island Chios were under control on Wednesday. Hundreds of firefighters and volunteers are still on alert, in case the flames will burst again, informs DPA, quoted by Agerpres.
“After three days of unimaginable torment, Chios woke up today without an active fire front,” the local politician portal said. However, extended areas of the island were burnt by flames.
According to the regional governor, 6,200 hectares were affected by fires – the equivalent of about 7% of the total area of the island.
The danger has not passed: hundreds of firefighters and volunteers are still mobilized, and planes and tank helicopters patrol the area to intervene quickly in case of new outbreaks.

Greece had a state of emergency on Monday on the island of Chios because of fires that laughed forests and pastures as they headed north, west and south of Chios. Strengthened by the strong wind, the flames caused current interruptions and evacuation of the inhabitants.

In other regions of Greece, the risk of forest fires remains high, the civil protection agency in this country announced on Wednesday.
Increased attention is recommended in the south of the Peloponnese peninsula, around Athens and on the Evia and Lesbos Islands.
The authorities warn about the dangerous combination between drought, high temperatures and strong winds: under such conditions, if a fire breaks, the flames spread rapidly.
