Russia has taught Kiev the bodies of their own soldiers mixed with those of Ukrainian soldiers during the recent repatriation of those who fell in the war, said the Ukrainian interior minister on Monday, informs The Kyiv Independent, taken over by Agerpres.
Klimenko's statement intervenes after the end of an exchange between Ukraine and Russia of the remains of the soldiers killed in the fights, in accordance with the agreements concluded in the recent Istanbul peace negotiations.
Kiev were returned in total 6,057 bodies. Vladimir Medinski, counselor of Russian President Vladimir Putin and head of the Russian delegation at the Istanbul negotiations, said that Russia received the bodies of 78 murdered soldiers.
According to Klimenko, the identification process was considerably complicated by the state in which the bodies returned by Russia were. “Parts of bodies (of the fallen soldiers) were in different bags. There were cases in which the remains of a person were returned even at different stages of repatriation,” the minister said.
Klimenko said that Russia has included bodies of their soldiers in the transfer to Ukraine, intentionally or accidentally. “It is possible that the Russians have done this intentionally to increase the number of transferred bodies and give more work to our (forensic) experts, adding to all the cynical pressure of information. Or it could be their usual negligence to their own people. In any case, we identify these bodies,” Klimenko said.
The negotiations of June 2 from Istanbul led to the agreement for the largest exchange of prisoners and bodies of the soldiers killed during the war, although no armistice was reached. At the end of May, 1,000 prisoners were changed on each side. The additional exchanges last week included seriously injured and sick soldiers.
On June 7, Russia accused Ukraine of rejecting the proposal to return the bodies, publishing images showing Ukrainian corpses stored in refrigerated rooms. Kiev rejected the accusations, stating that the images were filmed in Russia and not in a place designated for that exchange.
The Ukraine's foreign intelligence service announced on Monday that Russia is preparing to intensify the misinformation campaign related to the following prisoners, which could take place around June 20, in order to cause public indignation in the Ukrainian society.
According to SVR, the Russians would plan to distribute false lists with the dead military and civilians, whom Ukraine knows they would actually be alive. The purpose of this misinformation would be to cause a wave of indignation in the Ukrainian society.
