The administration of President Donald Trump has asked American embassies and consulates from abroad not to schedule new interviews for cultural studies and exchanges, given that the State Department is preparing to expand the checks on the social networks for foreign students, it is shown in an internal document, and in an internal Department of the State.

The decision comes in the context in which the Trump administration tries to intensify deportations and revokes study visas, as part of a harsh immigration policy.

In the message initially cited by Politico, Marco Rubio specifies that the schedules already established can be honored according to the current rules, but those available that have not yet been reserved must be eliminated from the system.

“The department carries out an evaluation of the existing operations and procedures regarding the selection and verification of the visa applicants of type F, M and J (for studies and cultural exchanges) and, depending on the conclusions of this evaluation, intends to issue instructions on the extension of checks on social networks for all these applicants,” the document shows.

The spokeswoman for the State Department, Tammy Bruce, refused to comment on the information about the internal message, but said that the US will use “all available tools” to verify people who want to enter the country.

“We will continue to use all the means we have to evaluate who comes here, whether it's students or other categories,” Buce said in a press briefing.

According to the internal message, the extension of checks on social networks will assume that the consular sections change their operations, procedures and how to allocate resources. In addition, they are advised to take into account the volume of work and the resources needed for each case, before making appointments.

The message also mentions that consular activity should remain focused on services for American citizens, immigration visas and fraud prevention.

We recall that last week the Trump administration decided to revoke the right of Harvard University to enroll students from other countries. The approximately 6,800 foreign students represent around 27% of the total university students.
