Paulina Chełmińska from the Municipal Office in Gdańsk announced on Tuesday that the inhabitants of Gdańsk are more and more willing to choose two wheels as a means of daily transport – regardless of the season.

“The measuring data shows that the intensity of bicycle traffic was the highest in the history of the city, and the number of journeys increased by 112 percent compared to 2023. The upward trend also persists in 2025 – only in the first four months of the year traffic was 15 % greater than in the same period of the previous year” – added Chełmińska.

The President of Gdańsk Aleksandra Dulkiewicz emphasized that he wants the inhabitants to choose a bicycle not only on weekends, but also on the way to school, work or shopping – every day.

“That is why we create infrastructure that makes it easier – safe bicycle storage, develop a network of routes, invest in new sections” – said Dulkiewicz quoted in the PAP.

The city currently has a network of bicycle routes with a length of almost 851 kilometers. This year, a new section of the bicycle road along Kiennieńska Street (1.9 km) was commissioned, and there are further investments – ecostrada along al. Armii Krajowej and ul. Sikorskiego (1.9 km), road to the moraine school hill (0.2 km) and a new section of the route at ul. New paratroopers (0.5 km).

There are 30 measuring points in the city, which record the intensity of bicycle traffic around the clock. Two of them – at ul. May 3 and al. Grunwaldzka – are equipped with displays on which cyclists can track the number of journeys on an ongoing basis.

We also observe an increase in activity in the Mevo metropolitan bicycle system. In April, users traveled in Gdańsk almost 586 thousand kilometers, performing nearly 177,000 trips. This result is much better than in the same period of last year. In the scale of the entire metropolis, Mevo users covered a total of over 873 thousand kilometers.

Gdańsk on June 10-13, 2025 will host the bicycle event-the Velo-Cita Congress. The slogan of this year's edition will be “Energising Solidarity”, or Energizing Solidarity – referring to both the historic heritage of the city and its contemporary involvement in creating a healthier, more balanced and solidary future.

From 10 to 13 June, Gdańsk will host over 1,000 participants from over 60 countries who will debate about the future of transport and quality of life in cities.

On June 11, the city streets will turn into a route full of urban attractions. As part of the Velo-Cita conference, an open and free bicycle parade will take place. Her start is scheduled for 19.00 from Targ Węglowa, the passage will take place through the center, around the shipyard, Aleja Zwycięstwa and Return through the Polish Navy and Jan from Kolno. Final – at Targ Węglowy. You will be able to rent a municipal Mevo city bike free of charge. (PAP)
