“Great and beautiful law”. Trump is looking for cuts, even Republicans protest

Donald Trump called members of the House of Representatives to accelerate work on the adoption of “a great and beautiful act” – he is particularly interested in extending tax breaks, which expire at the end of the year. According to the Independent Congress Commission, in combination with other fiscal means, it will lead to an increase in the federal deficit by over $ 4.8 trillion. (PLN 18.2 trillion) over the next decade.
To partially compensate, Republicans intend to introduce significant cuts in some expenses, especially in Medicaid – a healthcare program, which consists of over 70 million Americans with low income. In the Republican camp, despite the fact that they constitute the majority in both chambers of the Congress, there is no unanimity, which threatens to delay the legislative process.
The moderate wing of the party is afraid that significant cuts in the Medicaid program may be too risky before the Congress elections in the middle of the term, which will take place in November 2026.
For a part of the ultra -conservative wing, which is in favor of decreasing the deficit, these cuts are not enough. Several conservative politicians managed to temporarily block the trial on Friday, voting against the project during the work of the budget committee. “We don't like smoke curtains, we want real cuts,” said Republican Ralph Norman.
The chairman of the Chamber of Representatives Mike Johnson is trying to convince him to the project of reluctant MPs.
“This is the biggest reduction in expenses for three decades,” he said on Sunday at Fox. The commission is to debate the text again in the hope that it will be able to reach an agreement. But even if you manage to overcome this obstacle, it will not end there yet – Republican Senators have already announced that they are going to make serious changes to the project. This causes a great disappointment of Donald Trump, who hoped for the quick vote of the act.
