In accordance with the assumptions of the Plan Plan strategy, almost 600 GW of solar solar solar power is to be installed in the Member States. Organizations such as Solarpower Europe are fighting to make solar solar to become the main source of electricity. While in recent years there has been a dynamic rate of solar energy growth, in the following years the infrastructure that does not follow the pace of development may stand on the way to the implementation of the plan.

Solarpower Europe has been promoting solar energy as a key source of electricity in Europe since 1985. The organization strives to achieve this goal by 2030. Its representatives note that solar farm has been developing at an exponential pace for several years. The new Solarpower Europe report “Global Market Outlook for Solar Power 2025-2029” indicates that last year the power installed in PV around the world exceeded 2 TW, and this year another 655 GW will arrive (in the medium scenario). Experts estimate that this is a big step towards decarbonization of the economy. Forecasts for the coming years are equally good – in the most likely medium scenario until 2030, the installed power will reach 7.1 TW, but with appropriate conditions for the development of the sector could exceed 8 TW.
In the EU last year, energy production from the sun was the first to overtake coal (11 and 10 percent of participation in energy production, respectively). These are A strong increase in PV installations has contributed to the fact that the share of renewable energy in energy production in the EU increased to 47 percent. For comparison, fossil fuels were responsible for 29 percent. electricity production. Even five years ago, these proportions looked 34 percent, respectively. and 39 percent
– Today, solar energy is a source of about 10 percent. electricity in Europehowever, further growth occurs very quickly. Probably by 2030, participation in satisfying the demand for electricity in Europe will be about 30 percent. – says Newseria Walburg agency Hemetsberger, general director Solarpower Europe.
In her opinion, the condition for the further dynamic growth of the solar energy sector in the European Union, including the achievement of the organization's goal, is to focus on, among others greater flexibility of the system, i.e. its development and modernization, as well as the electrification of the economy.
– We are currently dealing with several difficulties. We develop so fast that the infrastructure does not keep up with the pace of development. The demand for electricity also does not develop at such a pace. We must electrify the economy, transport, heating, industry, we need intelligent, flexible demand – explains Walburg Hemetsberger. – We are currently observing rather inhibition in the field of renewable energy and are increasingly noting negative prices, which negatively affects the activities of investors. So we need more elasticity of the system, more flexible demand, electrification of society, we need much larger energy storage capacity. Storage in the form of batteries can quickly fill this demand.
In accordance with the data presented in the report prepared by the Embean Analytic Center, “European Electricity Review 2025”, the participation of photovoltaics in the production of electricity in the European Union exceeded the participation of coal and increased to 11 percent. (304 TWh). Importantly, An increase in solar energy production was observed in all Member States. Wind energy, however, constituted 17 percent in the EU energy mix. electricity production (477 TWH). The report shows that while the European Union continues the transformation process of the energy sector, its pace remains varied in individual sectors. In practice, this means that solar energy develops dynamically, and before the wind sector there are challenges in the form of, among others availability of infrastructure and the time of issuing permits. For further development and integration of renewable energy, it is necessary to develop network infrastructure and implement effective energy storage mechanisms.
– All these are investments that of course require money, but in the long run they will be profitable, because our energy system will be more competitive and bring benefits to society in a long -term perspective – says the expert.
It also draws attention to the needs of a photovoltaic connection with energy storage.
– Wind and sunny energy are currently the cheapest sources of electricity. There are always some differences between large photovoltaic parks and home installations, sea and land wind energy, but in general, renewable energy is much cheaper than the energy of fossil and nuclear fuels. If we combine solar with energy storage to use solar energy not only when the sun shines, but all day, even combining these two functions, in many cases it is much cheaper than the energy of fossil fuels due to the daily renewal we need – says general director Solarpower Europe.
The expert indicates that among the leaders of the solar energy industry in Europe there is invariably Germans and Spain. Poland is also high and ranks in the top five. The big advantage of photovoltaics is that installations are created everywhere. In an increasing number of countries, the power installed during the year exceeds 1 GW and these are not just the countries of the south of the continent. This is beneficial in the context of energy transformation, and thus – a reduction in energy prices.
– Solar energy has a chance to become the main source of electricity by 2030 or shortly after. This is not only our opinion, but also the position of the International Energy Agency, which provides for a further significant increase in the photovoltaic sector. The only question remains how quickly we can achieve this goal and provide benefits to European households and enterprises, which in turn depends on the regulatory environment, the network and the elasticity of the system – emphasizes Walburg Hemetsberger.
