A surprising father of the Polish large album. And it wasn't a gierek

Large conclusion is widely associated with the Gierkowska Decade. However, it should be remembered that the blocks of large disc have already been made.

If we asked Poles about associations with the Gierkowski times, then many of them would indicate, among others, large -panel blocks. In fact, the 1970s were marked by the record activity of housing cooperatives, which mainly used large -panel technology. Experts of the Gethome.pl portal remind, however, that the said technology began to be used in Poland a little earlier. It is also worth remembering that in the 1960s successful construction technology was celebrated than a large album.

Prefabricated people made their debut at the beginning of Gomułka's rule

Old statistical years from the PRL surprise not only a multitude of information provided, but also by the presence of colorful charts. Below you can see an example in the form of a chart from “Statistical Yearbook 1971”. In this chart, which has been slightly modernized by Gethome.pl, we see the division of the number of completed residential chambers in state and cooperative construction due to the method of implementation (traditional or industrialized). As you can see, the industrialized method assuming the erection of blocks with the help of prefabricated concrete began to gain popularity in the second half of the 1950s. In 1965, about half of the housing completed by the state and cooperatives was made of prefabricated elements.

The large -blown method reigned in the late 1960s.

The information presented on the chart does not mean, however, that the 1960s were a period of dominance of a large disc in multi -family housing. During this period, different technology gained popularity. I am talking about large -blocked technology, which, in relation to the large slab, has, among others, a much smaller width of concrete prefabricated elements. Blocks made in this older technology can be found quite easily even in the capital. It is about buildings erected using the Ż structural and assembly system, which has a fairly deceptive, colloquial name “Żerań brick”. Large -blocked technology is currently often confused with a large disc.

However, the CSO data confirms that in the late 1960s prefabrication in Polish multi -family housing was already advanced. In the last, incomplete year of the Gomułka team's rule, i.e. in the state and cooperatives put into use. Information from “Statistical Yearbook 1981” indicates that the similar share of large -panel technology in 1970 was 19.1%. Big changes were to take place after another ruling team came to power. It redirected to housing construction a larger part of investment outlays, and also clearly in favor of the greater application of large -panel technology.

The 1970s were already a decade under the sign of a large album

The aforementioned “Statistical Yearbook 1981” tells us a lot about changes that took place in Polish multi -family housing during Gierek. It is not only about the fact that the share of large -panel technology increased from about 19% of the cubature of erected blocks (1970) to 74% (1979). The total volume of residential buildings erected by the state and cooperatives in the record 1979 amounted to 49.86 million m 3, which meant volume almost twice as much as 1970 (27.43 million m 3). However, 1980 brought a decrease in the result to 39.30 million m 3. This was an announcement of worse statistics of housing construction from the 1980s.

It is worth adding that the popularity of the large -blown method has been systematically decreasing. As early as 1975, it was responsible for about 30% of the cubature of blocks erected by the state and cooperatives. The similar result from 1980 was only 19%. Interestingly, in the last year of the Gierek team's rule, only 3% of the cubic cubature of the blocks was completed in a technology other than large and large -blocked. The widespread use of prefabrication, combined with greater activity of private investors building houses, significantly helped to achieve a record volume of all completed houses and residential premises (93.55 million m 3 in 1979). The cubature record of 1979 was only beaten in 2020.

Other blocks of the block have previously introduced a large disc

Experts of the Gethome.pl portal as part of their rather unusual, historical analysis pay attention to one more issue. Namely, the PRL relative to other countries of the Eastern Bloc began to implement large -panel technology quite late as a solution to reduce the housing deficit. In 1970, the Polish People's Republic was characterized by much less use of large -panel technology than Czechoslovakia, the GDR, the USSR and Bulgaria. What's more, the protocols from the meetings of the Political Bureau of the PZPR Central Committee suggest that at the end of the 1960s at the highest level of power there was no conviction to further popularize energy-consuming and quite expensive large album (see: D. Jarosz, Polish roads to the apartment in the period of Gomułkowski (1956-1970), Poland 1944/45-1989: Studies and material).
