Boris and Gleb Sower

The day of the memory of the Strastol-Merpets of Boris and Gleb is the first Orthodox holiday established in Rus'. His story began in 1115.

Boris and Gleb (in baptism – Roman and David) were Russian princes, sons of the Kyiv Prince Vladimir Svyatoslavovich. In the internecine struggle that broke out in 1015, they were killed by the older brother Svyatopolk Complete. Boris and Gleb were the first Russian saints. Subsequently, they began to be considered the intercessors of the Russian land.

In Rus', cucumbers and pumpkin began to plant from this day. So that they are ugly – a pestle from a mortar was buried in the garden. In addition, on this day they continued to sow the fields. So they said: “Boris and Gleb sow bread.”

Nightingale begins to sing from Boris and Gleb. If they sing loudly, thoroughly, it means that the summer is not around the mountains. If the nightingale sings all night, the next day will be sunny. And if you hear the nightingale earlier than a cuckoo, then you will live happily all summer.

Sometimes this day was also called “Barysh-day”, and St. Boris-a young lady. Merchants violently celebrated his memory in the hope of receiving the ladies for this throughout the year. A successful year promised a successful sale of something on this day.
