Leland Walker Joins U-BT Cluj-Napoca on Loan from PAOK

Leland Walker, a 23-year-old American guard, is set to make his debut for U-BT Cluj-Napoca after joining the team on loan from PAOK Thessaloniki. This move marks his first transfer for the 2026-2027 season. Both Mihai Silvășan, Cluj-Napoca’s head coach, and Bogdan Nicolescu have expressed enthusiasm about the addition of Walker, who was previously described by Jussi Savolainen, the coach of Vilpas Salon, as a talented player.

In the opening month of the 2026-2027 competitive season, U-BT Cluj-Napoca recorded 4 wins and 5 losses, prompting the Romanian champions to enhance their roster with Walker, who had started the season in Finland with Salon Vilpas.

Leland Walker: “A Great Creator”

PAOK Thessaloniki secured Walker with a buyout clause and signed him to a contract valid until 2029, subsequently loaning him to U-BT Cluj-Napoca, which competes in both EuroCup and the Adriatic League. Walker will join his new teammates in Belgrade, where U-BT faces Partizan Belgrade on November 2. However, Walker will not play in that match and is expected to debut three days later on November 5 against Tenerife.

“He brings scoring qualities and is someone who can make a difference. In the first two games of the Basketball Champions League, he recorded 15 assists with zero turnovers. He is a great creator, and we hope to integrate him quickly to help us achieve our goals,” Silvășan remarked about the new player.

“I have seen some of his statistics, and they are indeed impressive for a player in his first year after college. We are looking forward to him integrating quickly and helping us perform well,” added Nicolescu, who is also in his first season with U-BT.

Comparisons to Errick McCollum: “An Explosive and Efficient Guard”

Standing at 1.85 meters, Walker played NCAA basketball for Eastern Kentucky, Florida Atlantic, and Wyoming. In the 2025-2026 season at Wyoming, he averaged 13.5 points, 3.8 assists, and 3.0 rebounds. After going undrafted in the NBA, Walker moved to Europe, signing with Vilpas Salon.

In the BCL preliminaries, he averaged 34.7 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 3.0 assists. Domestically, his performance has been strong, with averages of 23.9 points, 5.8 assists, and 3.9 rebounds. In his first two BCL group games, he scored 28 points and 7 assists against AEK Athens and 21 points, 8 assists, and 5 rebounds against Falco Szombathely, marking at least 20 points in 13 of the 14 games played in the 2026-2027 season.

According to an analysis from Scoutory, Walker is “an explosive and highly efficient guard capable of scoring in many ways.” His offensive repertoire is his primary strength, although his height limits his defensive impact and rebounding contributions. Scouts also noted his shooting profile and versatility, excelling in various game situations.

Walker is described as a highly effective finisher near the basket, possessing a solid physique and proficiency with his left hand. While he is regarded as a good game organizer, Scoutory suggests he needs to improve his decision-making skills.

Defensively, he struggles against shooters in spot-up situations due to his limited wingspan. Scoutory claims that Walker’s profile is similar to that of Errick McCollum, a EuroLeague champion.

Jussi Savolainen on Walker: “A Fighter, No Doubt”

Jussi Savolainen, the coach of Vilpas Salon, highlighted Walker’s speed as his main asset. “From the start, he had the mindset of a player who could become a significant offensive weapon for our team and accepted that role. The initial weeks were an adaptation period to the team’s functioning and training requirements,” Savolainen stated.

“However, he learned quickly, and from the first game of the season, I saw his potential to be very effective and significantly assist us. His standout performance came during the qualifying tournament for the BCL in Bulgaria, where he showcased his incredible offensive talent,” he added.

Savolainen believes Walker will learn to improve his physical preparation, recovery, and ability to read the pace of the game. Defensively, he mentions that Walker will need to find solutions to guard players from different positions.

When asked what word describes Walker, Savolainen responded: “Fighter, without a doubt. He has the mindset of someone who views everything as a battle and wants to give his all to help his team. This aspect is likely the most important part of him. He considers how he can assist his team.

When he steps on the court, he aims to deliver his best version and support his team. When things get tough, he wants to take responsibility and carry the team forward.”

Walker Describes Himself: “A Relaxed, Calm Guy”

After scoring 42 points against CSM Oradea in the preliminary tournament final of the Basketball Champions League, Walker drew the attention of European media and was able to give an interview on the official site of the competition.

He spoke about his experience with Vilpas Salon in the BCL qualifiers and his adaptation to European basketball. “I am definitely a relaxed, calm guy with whom you can talk. I am not the type always agitated and full of energy. I am just a relaxed person, whose main hobby is basketball,” Walker stated.

“Everyone dreams of making it to the NBA. But I am here now and learning a lot: about teams, places, and people. I am here for this experience and all that this journey can offer me,” he continued.

“From a scoring perspective, I believe I have made the most impact with mid-range shots, after getting past my direct opponent and stopping to shoot. In fact, I have also succeeded in scoring from three-point range, with good percentages there,” Walker mentioned.

“One of the things I am trying to improve is how I involve my teammates in the game, rather than focusing solely on myself and relying only on my skills to score and create more space,” concluded the Indianapolis native.
