Trump’s Decision to Lift Sanctions on Russia Faces Bipartisan Backlash

Prominent Republican figures have voiced strong criticism of President Donald Trump’s recent decision to exempt Russia from new sanctions passed by Congress in September to support Ukraine, according to reports.
Senator Thom Tillis, a frequent critic of Trump’s diplomatic approaches, labeled the decision as “completely irresponsible” on social media platform X. He added, “If the president truly wants to lower energy prices, he can address the Iranian issue instead of catering to Vladimir Putin.”
Senator Ted Cruz also condemned the exemption, characterizing it as a “mistake” during a segment on Fox News.
On Friday night, Trump issued an executive order to suspend the implementation of various sanctions aimed primarily at the Russian energy sector.
Calls for Reversal
This controversial decision, which has drawn sharp criticism from Kiev, comes shortly after an agreement between Washington and Moscow to lift sanctions that would allow the U.S. to import large quantities of Russian diesel. The rising fuel prices are a growing concern for Trump’s camp as the midterm elections approach in early November.
Republican Congressman Michael McCaul urged Trump to reconsider his stance, advocating for the sanctions initially proposed by the late Senator Lindsey Graham.
Senator John Cornyn expressed that Graham would be “saddened” by this development on social media.
The Democratic opposition, actively campaigning to regain control of Congress, has also condemned the lifting of sanctions. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer remarked, “Trump just gave Putin the best birthday gift ever” in a statement.
The Graham legislation, enacted mid-September, represents Congress’s first major action against Moscow since the billionaire returned to power. The White House had endorsed the measure earlier in the summer.
