Zelensky Urges US to Respond to Russian Attacks on Energy Infrastructure

Zelensky reports damage to energy systems due to attacks

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has condemned Russia’s recent missile assaults targeting critical energy infrastructure in Ukraine, stating that the attacks, which involved Iskander-M, KN-23, S-400, Zircon, and Onyx missiles launched from the Kursk, Bryansk, Voronezh, and Rostov regions, inflicted significant damage.

Among the 128 drones deployed in the attacks, 77 were classified as reactive. According to reports, Ukraine’s air defense systems successfully intercepted or neutralized four missiles and 115 drones, marking a significant defensive response.

The attacks resulted in strikes at 22 locations, with debris from downed missiles landing in eight areas. Some missiles failed to reach their intended targets, though the exact number of successful hits has not been disclosed.

Zelensky highlighted that among the sites targeted were energy facilities and critical infrastructure in Kyiv, the Kyiv region, and Kharkiv. He described Russia’s ballistic strikes as deliberately aimed at Ukraine’s energy sector, which is a sensitive issue, particularly following recent statements from the American president regarding a ceasefire. Zelensky remarked, “This is a blatant display of Russia’s disrespect towards the United States.”
He added that the attacks had left at least 600,000 people without electricity, warning of potential wider outages to come.

“Unfortunately, there has been significant damage to our energy complex, affecting 26 elements of our electricity infrastructure and four oil and gas facilities,” Zelensky noted. He called on the United States to respond decisively to the Russian aggression and urged President Donald Trump to implement stronger sanctions against Russia. “The American president has all the necessary tools to push for peace through strength, fairness, and pressure on the aggressor,” he stressed.

Zelensky also requested additional missile packages for Ukraine’s Patriot air defense systems from the US.

Context

  • On October 11, the US president announced a ceasefire agreement focusing on energy infrastructure between Ukraine and Russia, stating that the deal was now in effect. Zelensky expressed surprise at this announcement, indicating that it was news to him. The Kremlin commented the next day, saying it had nothing to say about the ceasefire, as discussions were ongoing.
  • A White House official explained to Axios that Trump’s proposal suggested only halting attacks on oil refineries, with potential future agreements for stopping strikes on power plants and energy networks. A Ukrainian official criticized this proposal as one-sided.
  • Zelensky stated that Ukraine would adhere to the ceasefire agreement but would respond if Russia continued its strikes. He emphasized that on the night of October 12, Ukraine did not attack Russian targets while Russian forces were targeting Ukrainian energy facilities.
