Donetsk Strike Results in Death of at Least 20 Russian Officers

On August 26, Donetsk experienced a significant assault involving rockets and drones, resulting in at least 20 Russian officers’ deaths. Monitoring Telegram channels reported approximately ten explosions, with large plumes of black smoke rising above the city. The General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces later confirmed that both the main and backup command posts of Russian forces were targeted by air-launched missiles.
According to “Mediazona,” this incident marks the largest losses for Russian military headquarters from a single attack since the start of the war. Of the officers killed, 18 died on the day of the strike, while two succumbed to injuries later. They were part of the command structures of the “Center” group of troops from the Central Military District and the 41st Combined Arms Army.
Investigative journalists identified the deceased using personnel lists from these units. Reports from the channel Exilenova+ indicated that one strike hit a building located at Illyicha Avenue 97, previously home to various research and industrial facilities before the war. The “CyberBoroshno” project identified another target as an underground parking facility beneath an unfinished residential complex, with Ukrainian OSINT projects suggesting both sites were utilized as command posts by the Russian army.
In contrast, Denis Pushilin, head of the Russian occupation administration, claimed that the target was the “Donetsk City” shopping center, reporting eight injuries, including two children, two women, and four men.
While compiling the casualty list, “Mediazona” also uncovered two previous instances of mass officer fatalities within the 41st Army’s headquarters: eight officers were killed on August 4, 2026, and four on September 8, 2025.
