Matei Ilie Reflects on Romania’s Narrow Loss to Sweden

Defender Matei Ilie, 23, shared his thoughts on Romania’s recent 1-0 defeat to Sweden and the overall performances in their first four matches of the Nations League. Lauded by national coach Gică Hagi for his contributions, Ilie expressed that the team could have achieved more from the game against Sweden.

After the match, Ilie noted, “We aimed to display more personality and courage compared to previous games. I think we played well, but unfortunately, the result did not reflect our effort. However, it’s encouraging to see so many fans supporting us.” He added, “We could have secured a point or more if we had greater confidence and patience in our ball movement. I don’t want to dwell on bad luck; you make your own luck.”

Addressing the frustration of not achieving better results, Ilie remarked, “I can’t provide a solid answer right now, as it’s still fresh. We need to reflect on what we did well and what we did wrong, and come back with renewed energy next time. It’s essential to reset, put the past behind us, and maintain a positive attitude.”

When asked about Hagi’s potential departure, Ilie responded, “We don’t listen to rumors. I haven’t discussed this with my teammates. We focus on our game. We hope he stays because he is an excellent coach, and we learn from him every day.”

Hagi commented on the team’s promising players, stating, “In my view, we have gained three players: Coubiș, Matei Ilie, and Eissat. They have shown they can compete at the national level. Coubiș and Ilie formed a solid central defense. Although mistakes were made, it is a part of the process. The national team must remain open to young talent with great potential who will represent the future of Romanian football.”
