On September 24, during naval training exercises along the Caspian Sea, severe weather conditions resulted in military personnel being swept out to sea. Reports indicate that while three soldiers were rescued, 14 others lost their lives.
In the wake of this tragic event, a criminal investigation has been initiated concerning the deaths of the military personnel. Among those detained are the chief of staff, the first deputy commander of the navy, and several unit commanders, including those leading a marine infantry company and a boat.
In response to the incident, President Kassym-Jomart Tokaev ordered a comprehensive review of the Ministry of Defense.
Aidos Mirzakhametov, previously in command of Kazakhstan’s special operations forces since January 2024, has been appointed as the new head of the defense ministry.
