Italy’s second largest airport, Milano-Malpensa International Airport (MXP), has officially been renamed after former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi as of Friday. The decision, which was initially made in 2024, faced extensive legal challenges before being finalized.
Travelers arriving at Milano-Malpensa will now be welcomed to an airport named after one of the most prominent and controversial figures in recent Italian politics. A ceremony held on September 25 at Terminal 1 marked the unveiling of the new title “Aeroporto Internazionale Milano Malpensa – Silvio Berlusconi” alongside the new logo.
The name change was approved by ENAC, the Italian Civil Aviation Authority, in July 2024, with the consent of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport. This renaming pays tribute to Berlusconi, who founded the Forza Italia party and passed away on June 12, 2023, at the age of 86.
Among those present at the ceremony were Infrastructure and Transport Minister Matteo Salvini, Foreign Affairs Minister Antonio Tajani, current Forza Italia leader and Senate President Ignazio La Russa, and Paolo Berlusconi, the former Prime Minister’s brother.
