Zelensky described the meeting as productive
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky engaged in a significant dialogue with former President Donald Trump during their recent meeting in the United States. Zelensky characterized the discussions as “positive and productive,” highlighting that he was one of the few world leaders to hold such direct talks with Trump, who also met leaders from France, the UK, and Japan.
Prior to their meeting, Trump expressed optimism regarding the resolution of the war in Ukraine, suggesting it could end “much sooner than many expect” and conveyed a message to Russian President Vladimir Putin to “stop the war.”
Energy Considerations
During the public portion of their talks, Trump addressed Ukraine’s attacks on Russian oil facilities, which have raised concerns about fuel prices in the United States, particularly as the congressional elections approach. He acknowledged that while these operations have hurt Russian resources, they also impact diesel prices.
Zelensky reported that discussions included energy ceasefire proposals, stressing that Ukraine would not unilaterally halt strikes unless Russia ceases its attacks as well. “If there is no attacking energy facilities, then all energy facilities should be included in the ceasefire,” he stated.
In addition, Zelensky mentioned that Ukraine is amenable to a ceasefire regarding energy, but only if it encompasses all energy infrastructure, including heating and power supply systems. He proposed that the Americans relay this offer to the Russians.
Reports from Newsmax indicate that Ukraine also raised the issue of utilizing Starlink for strikes against Russia, but Trump suggested discussing this with Elon Musk, who has previously expressed concerns about escalating the conflict.
Patriot Missile System
Another focal point of their conversation was the potential for the US to grant licenses for Ukraine to produce Patriot missiles. Zelensky noted that Trump seemed positive about the initiative, with production possibly starting within a year or a year and a half.
The two leaders also deliberated the possibility of the US supplying interceptors for Patriot systems this winter. While Zelensky felt that the Americans want to assist, he did not receive a definitive answer.
Zelensky remarked, “When discussing sensitive topics with leaders, they can say ‘yes’ or ‘no.’ It’s good that nobody said ‘no.’ That’s considered a positive outcome in my role.”
Ending the War
Trump commended the Ukrainian spirit and expressed belief that both Zelensky and Putin desire to conclude the war eventually, though he refrained from detailing what a potential agreement would entail.
Zelensky asserted that both the US and Ukraine aim to end the war before winter, saying, “I hope we can put an end to this conflict. President Trump can help us in this regard; it needs to happen as soon as possible, before winter arrives.”
He also suggested involving Chinese President Xi Jinping in negotiations set to take place this week in Washington.
While expressing readiness to meet with Putin, Zelensky believed the Russian leader is currently unwilling to engage in trilateral talks or conclude the conflict. Overall, he maintained that his meeting with Trump was “positive and productive.”
