President Donald Trump has dismissed warnings that artificial intelligence (AI) poses an existential threat to humanity. This statement comes as researchers and employees from OpenAI and Anthropic advocate for a slowdown in the development of advanced AI systems.
When asked if he fears that AI could lead to humanity’s demise, Trump replied, “No, I have no such concern.” Instead, he highlighted the technological competition between the United States and China as the primary risk, as reported by CNBC.
“What worries me is that if we do not win the AI race, we will find ourselves in a very bad position,” Trump stated on Thursday. He mentioned that the United States is currently approximately one year ahead of China in AI technology, a lead he considers crucial.
The competition between these two major economies has intensified as AI models developed in China have become more sophisticated and are increasingly adopted internationally.
