In a recent meeting with Russian educators, President Vladimir Putin drew a controversial analogy comparing Russia to an orca and Ukraine to a polar bear. His remarks came as a professor shared experiences from a trip to the North Pole. Putin emphasized the need for Russian students to understand the “world we live in,” using the example of a food chain where orcas prey on polar bears.
He stated, “Orcas eat these bears like they are small cubs. They attack in groups and tear them apart. This is very interesting. This is the food chain. Children need to be taught this, so they understand the world we live in and why we are conducting a special military operation,” he said.
Putin further referenced American author Jack London’s novels and explained the northern tradition of sacrificing the elderly to wolves, describing it as “harsh” but noting, “that’s how they live.”
Putin’s Comparison Lacks Scientific Basis
However, The Moscow Times speculates that Putin might have fallen victim to misleading images generated by artificial intelligence circulating online.
According to BBC reports, there are no scientifically confirmed cases of orcas killing polar bears, despite the recent proliferation of false videos claiming to depict such encounters, including within Russia.
No documented incidents of orca attacks on polar bears have been found in publications by the International Association for Bear Research and Management. Scientists only recognize indirect feeding relationships between the two species and increased overlaps due to melting Arctic ice.
