According to Western officials, Russia is experiencing a monthly loss of approximately 6,000 soldiers in Ukraine, surpassing its recruitment efforts.
Although Russia continues to recruit rapidly in the battlefield at an estimated rate of 1,000 soldiers per day, this number has not been enough in recent months to replace those killed or injured.
“We estimate that the difference between the number of personnel Russia loses due to casualties and the number it manages to recruit is currently about 6,000 per month,” said a Western official.
In response to this situation, President Vladimir Putin has intensified attacks, targeting civil infrastructure and civilians in Ukraine. Since the beginning of July, over 360 missiles have been launched, taking advantage of Kyiv’s lack of defenses against ballistic missiles. It is evident that Moscow aims to crush Ukrainian morale by destroying the country’s energy infrastructure this winter.
Putin Faces Limited Options
Such tactics stem, in part, from Putin’s limited options to compensate for substantial battlefield losses through additional recruitments, the cited source notes.
Western officials believe that a new mobilization would pose significant political and economic risks, citing that the last mobilization in the fall of 2022 led to the departure of approximately one million Russians from the country—many of whom were highly skilled—with less than half returning.
Moreover, it remains unclear whether the Russian army could absorb the hundreds of thousands of new recruits resulting from this, given the lack of equipment and officers.
ISW: Russians Losing More Ground Than Gaining
Despite slow advances on the battlefield and increasing soldier losses, Vladimir Putin continues to prepare Russian society for a prolonged war in Ukraine, according to a recent assessment by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).
The American think tank claims that Putin falsely asserts that Russian forces are advancing in all directions on the front at an accelerated pace.
In reality, Russian forces lost control over 27.09 square kilometers in the first three weeks of August 2026, based on evidence analyzed by ISW.
During the same period, Russian forces captured or infiltrated an area of 8.52 square kilometers, averaging a pace of 0.39 square kilometers per day. The rate of Russia’s advances has steadily declined since January 2026.
Last week, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that Russian forces have suffered approximately 267,000 military losses, including 155,000 deaths, along the entire front line since the beginning of 2026, with around 70-80% of total Russian losses occurring in the direction of Konstantinivka.
Zelensky indicated that the Kremlin is preparing to mobilize approximately 300,000 soldiers following the State Duma elections scheduled for September 18-20, partly to reinforce Russian positions in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions.
