Yatsenyuk Explains Decision Not to Run for President in 2014

Yatsenyuk recalls being appointed Prime Minister during wartime

Arseniy Yatsenyuk, former Prime Minister of Ukraine, highlighted that his decision not to participate in the 2014 presidential election was a fully conscious political choice aimed at stabilizing the nation rather than engaging in an electoral cycle.

He reminisced about how he renounced the presidential race from the podium of the Verkhovna Rada shortly after being appointed Prime Minister during a time of war. At that point, Crimea had been annexed just seven days prior, and the Autonomous Republic of Crimea’s parliament was seized that morning around five o’clock.

“Around one o’clock that day, I was appointed as Prime Minister. From the parliamentary podium, I officially declared that I was resigning my political mandate and would not run for president. I called it a ‘kamikaze government’ at that time,” emphasized Yatsenyuk.

He explained that his refusal had two primary objectives.

“The first goal was to stabilize the situation in the country as the head of the government. The second goal was to prevent political confrontation among the democratic supporters. If I had run for the presidency as Prime Minister, I would have been preoccupied with winning the election rather than focusing on the country. From today’s perspective, I can say I would have won those presidential elections, but unfortunately, we no longer have a time machine,” shared the former Prime Minister.
