Iran’s armed forces declared on Sunday their commitment to achieving a “complete defeat” of the United States, one day before the expiration of a 60-day deadline set in a memorandum signed between Tehran and Washington in June aimed at negotiating a final peace agreement.
The General Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces stated, “Until the complete defeat of the American-Zionist enemies in the region, the restoration of the rights of the heroic Iranian nation, and the capitulation of the enemy, we will not yield to the United States.” This statement was issued in light of the anniversary of the return of prisoners from the Iran-Iraq War (1980-1988), according to the Tasnim news agency, cited by EFE and Agerpres.
The military body emphasized its determination to defend the “legitimate demands” and the “restoration of rights” of the Iranian people and its Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, without clarifying what these demands entail.
The General Staff asserted that Iranian forces, facing “the most equipped army in the world,” referring to the United States, have succeeded in subduing its leaders.
Iran and the United States signed a memorandum of understanding on June 17, which stipulated an immediate cessation of military operations between the two sides and established a 60-day deadline for negotiating a final peace agreement.
However, hostilities between Iran and the United States resumed on July 7, after Washington accused Tehran of attacking commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, followed by new American airstrikes against southern Iran.
Since then, both parties have accused each other of violating the memorandum.
