At just 23 years old, after an outstanding season, Imran Fetai has secured a three-year contract with Dinamo Bucharest. The North Macedonian central defender’s journey to the Romanian capital has been anything but linear, having left home twice to find playing opportunities and returning each time with greater prospects.
In just over a year, Fetai transitioned from Besa Doberdoll to Shkendija, participating in Champions League qualifiers, eliminating FCSB, qualifying for the Conference League, and making his debut for the Macedonian national team.
Currently, Fetai’s story is unfolding off the pitch in Romania, as he has yet to receive clearance to play. His status as a non-EU player means that the necessary registration formalities are still ongoing. However, this wait is not unfamiliar to Fetai.
A Career Marked by Strategic Moves
Fetai hails from Gostivar, a small town in northern Macedonia near the borders with Albania and Kosovo, where he began his football career and learned a key principle that guided his journey: if he isn’t playing, he will leave.
This principle led him to leave Shkendija, the club where he grew up, to seek senior football in Albania, and later, to depart from Gostivari, his hometown team, when he realized he wasn’t getting the minutes he needed to develop. Each departure seemed like a step back, yet it allowed him to ultimately move forward.
Despite his rising profile in football over the past year, he maintains a low-key presence off the field. He refrains from discussing his personal life, stating, “Speculations do not distract me at all from my focus,” when rumors of his potential transfer surfaced.
Fetai has a grounded demeanor, able to tune out surrounding noise even as his career speeds up. In the spring of 2026, shortly after his debut for the national team, he reiterated that he wouldn’t let external factors affect him.
While calculated, Fetai’s journey has been marked by ambition. He has not stayed where he felt stagnant; when game time became scarce, he moved on to seek opportunities elsewhere. His calculated image, however, has shown signs of vulnerability. After a match against Sileks in May, Fetai lost his temper and reportedly damaged a door in frustration, an incident that required police intervention and led to a 500 euro fine from the disciplinary committee.
Refusing to Be a Substitute
Growing up in Gostivar, where there is a significant Albanian community, Fetai joined Shkendija’s youth academy. He quickly made his way into the senior squad by the age of 16, but the lack of playing time hindered his development.
At 18, he decided to leave, not to a prestigious academy abroad but to Albania, signing with Apolonia Fier. This initial step was a bold move to carve his own path in professional football.
Although the experience in Albania did not yield immediate success, he returned to North Macedonia to join Gostivari, where he was initially seen as a key defender. Yet, the lack of playing time pushed him to seek new challenges again.
In May 2022, after re-signing with Gostivari, he was already involved in youth national teams. However, just seven months later, he departed again, citing insufficient playing time—a decision that marked a significant turning point in his career.
His next stop was Tikves, where he transformed into a regular starter, appearing 27 times in the league during the 2023/24 season and winning the North Macedonia Cup, his first important trophy. This success led him back to Shkendija in the summer of 2025, where he signed a three-year contract, a homecoming after leaving the club as a teenager.

A Stellar Year
The subsequent year could be dubbed a period of remarkable growth for Fetai. In June 2025, he returned to Shkendija and made his mark in Champions League preliminaries, which led to Dinamo’s interest. He was instrumental in the defense that eliminated FCSB, contributing to a 1-0 home victory and a 2-1 win at the National Arena, playing the full match in Bucharest.
Fetai continued to impress in European competitions, totaling eight appearances in the Conference League. The spring of 2026 marked his debut for the national team during a goalless draw against Ireland at Aviva Stadium, where he earned three caps before his move to Dinamo.
From Near Misses to New Beginnings
Prior to joining the national team, Fetai was already attracting attention. In May 2024, while playing for Tikves, he caught the eye of Zalaegerszeg, a club in Hungary’s top league, but the transfer did not materialize. Ironically, two years later, Zalaegerszeg’s former coach, Nuno Campos, would meet Fetai at Dinamo Bucharest.
