Filipe Coelho, the 45-year-old coach of University of Craiova, analyzed the first leg match against KuPS Kuopio, which ended in a 1-1 draw in the third preliminary round of the Europa League.
Played on a synthetic pitch in Kuopio, the match saw the champions of Finland and Romania share points. The return leg is scheduled for next Thursday, August 13, at 20:00.
Coelho expressed satisfaction with the outcome, highlighting that his team had controlled the game during the first half. However, he noted that they lost their grip in the second half, particularly in a 20-minute period where the home team performed better.
Coelho: “We Must Improve at Home to Advance”
“Looking only at the result, it isn’t bad considering we played away on an artificial pitch. We had a strong first half, creating several chances for a second goal. However, we did not start the second half well, and the opponent responded effectively, scoring on us.
We were aware that they excel in set-piece situations, and by allowing a few corners, they gained confidence. We were not effective in our offensive transitions. For about 20 minutes in the second half, we lost control but then regrouped and created more scoring opportunities. In the end, the result isn’t bad,” Coelho noted.
“In the first half, I was pleased with how we controlled the game and the number of chances we created, but we need to be more efficient. We must play at a higher level at home if we want to progress,” he added.
Coelho emphasized the need for thorough analysis, recognizing what the team did well and what needs improvement as they prepare for the next match. He expressed gratitude to the fans who traveled a great distance to support their team, acknowledging their dedication. “We need to recover our players and prepare as best we can for the return match against KuPS. They are a strong, organized team, but we will strive to advance,” concluded Coelho at the press conference.
