Sybiga: Russian attacks cannot be justified under any circumstances
In a statement on August 5, Ukrainian Deputy Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga condemned the recent Russian missile strikes that targeted Kyiv and surrounding areas, resulting in at least 17 fatalities and over 40 injuries. He emphasized the need for ongoing international support and pressure on Russia to cease its aggression.
Sybiga stressed, “Russian attacks do not take summer vacations; support for Ukraine and pressure on the aggressor must not stop. Every interceptor matters. These are the means that save lives, and I urge all partners to expedite the adoption of all relevant decisions.”
The Deputy Minister pointed to the necessity of undermining Russia’s ability to produce instruments of ballistic terror, advocating for the urgent implementation of additional stringent sanctions.
“I also caution against attempts to draw false moral comparisons between the aggressor and a nation defending itself. Russian attacks cannot be justified under any circumstances, regardless of Ukraine’s actions,” Sybiga stated.
He reaffirmed Ukraine’s right to strike legitimate military targets within Russia in self-defense, in accordance with Article 51 of the UN Charter.
Context
- The Ukrainian Air Force reported that during the night of August 5, Russian forces launched attacks using four naval missiles “Tsirkon”/”Oniks”, 24 ballistic missiles “Iskander-M”/S-400, and 115 attack drones. None of the missiles were intercepted, although 98 drones were destroyed. The primary strike target was the Kyiv region.
- According to President Volodymyr Zelensky, the main targets of the Russian assault included warehouses belonging to civilian enterprises, such as a sorting center of “Nova Poshta”, key facilities of “Epicenter”, and a distribution warehouse complex for Rozetka.
- Ukrainian Prime Minister Serhiy Koretsky announced that urgent meetings with business representatives would be organized to develop solutions for maintaining the uninterrupted operation of logistics companies and trade enterprises in light of the attacks.
