The Dutch Football Federation is grappling with a string of rejections following Ronald Koeman’s resignation from the national team. In the wake of Koeman’s departure, Arne Slot, initially considered a favorite for the position after his dismissal from Liverpool, has informed KNVB officials that he prefers to continue his career in club football, stating that this decision was not made lightly.
Other candidates, including Erik ten Hag, have also ruled themselves out, opting to remain as technical director at FC Twente Enschede while waiting for a lucrative opportunity at a top club. Meanwhile, Peter Bosz, coach of Dennis Man, is not planning to leave PSV Eindhoven as he aims for a second consecutive title in the Netherlands and a lengthy run in the Champions League for the 2026-2027 season.
Amid this uncertainty, the newspaper De Telegraaf has reported that Louis van Gaal may be willing to return and assist the national team. Sources close to the renowned coach suggest he could step back into the role of head coach for the Netherlands.
Van Gaal’s Health and Potential Comeback
According to De Telegraaf, the 74-year-old coach feels healthy after overcoming prostate cancer detected in 2022. Publicly announcing his diagnosis in April 2022, Van Gaal had stepped back after the World Cup in Qatar to focus on his recovery.
The role of head coach could suit him at this stage of his career, as it would entail significantly less pressure compared to daily responsibilities at a club. The tasks during international breaks and major tournaments, held biennially, are considered manageable.
Potential Fourth Term for Van Gaal as National Coach
Van Gaal has never fully withdrawn from football, having most recently served as an advisor for Ajax Amsterdam. A notable advantage of his possible return is his familiarity with much of the current squad.
During the 2022 World Cup, he led the Netherlands to the semifinals, where they were narrowly defeated by eventual champions Argentina in a penalty shootout. Now, the experienced coach could potentially take the reins of the Oranje for the fourth time in his career.
