Christine Lagarde, the President of the European Central Bank (ECB), reaffirmed her intention to continue in her role next year, stating, “the captain remains on the ship” despite looming challenges. This declaration was made during a press conference following the ECB’s decision to keep its three key interest rates unchanged.
When pressed about her commitment to complete her term, which is set to end in October 2027, Lagarde expressed her reluctance to be “penned in.” She emphasized, “As I mentioned before, when there are clouds on the horizon, the captain stays on the ship, and this captain is staying on the ship.”
Lagarde also noted, “You will not see me leaving before 2027.” On July 3, she previously hinted at the possibility of stepping down early to contribute a “European voice” to the presidential debate in France. However, when asked if she would support a candidate or run for office herself, she humorously responded, “I will think about it,” only to correct herself, saying, “No, I’m joking. I don’t think that is on the agenda.”
The next presidential elections in France are scheduled for April 18 and May 2, 2027.
