Ukrainian Defense Minister Hmara expresses confidence in General Drapaty
Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksandr Hmara has expressed his strong belief in General Mykhailo Drapaty, whom he nominated for the role of Commander-in-Chief yesterday. “We have agreed to maintain honesty between us and to resolve any differences in the interests of Ukrainian soldiers,” Hmara stated.
During their discussions, Hmara and Drapaty emphasized Ukraine’s commitment to continuing its assault and technological pressure on Russia through all available means.
“We also talked about our vision for the future with the Commander-in-Chief. We share a common position on the development of Ukraine’s defense forces. President Volodymyr Zelensky has supported our vision,” Hmara explained.
According to Hmara, their focus is now on developing a strategy that includes practical steps to end the war on Ukraine’s terms. “Our initial steps involve supporting the frontlines, enhancing assistance from partners, and shifting the war onto the aggressor’s territory. We will ensure stable and flexible access for combat units to effective means, including long-range capabilities, technology development, and asymmetric solutions,” he promised.
He stressed that the goal remains to achieve technological superiority for the Ukrainian army while maximizing the preservation of lives through technological advancements. Plans include scaling up deep strike and middle strike operations, as well as other capabilities.
Context
- On July 15, the Ukrainian Parliament dismissed the government led by Yulia Svyrydenko. Following the announcement that Mykhailo Fedorov, who had headed the Ministry of Defense for the last six months, would not be in the updated Cabinet, protests erupted, demanding the resignation of the Commander of the Armed Forces, Oleksandr Syrskyi.
- On July 16, amid the significant scandal, President Volodymyr Zelensky temporarily appointed Hmara to lead the Ministry of Defense, a decision supported by the Cabinet.
- On July 21, Zelensky announced the resignation of Commander Oleksandr Syrskyi and appointed Mykhailo Drapaty, who previously commanded the Joint Forces of the Armed Forces.
- Zelensky instructed Drapaty, Hmara, and the commanders of the Armed Forces to prepare an updated defense strategy for Ukraine.
