United Airlines’ Fuel Costs and Ticket Price Increases
The airline reports that it will incur nearly $6 billion more in fuel costs compared to earlier estimates for 2026, as a resurgence in oil prices has altered profit forecasts for the third quarter and the year overall.
According to Reuters, major U.S. airlines have sharply increased ticket prices in light of this year’s fuel cost shock, testing whether they can pass these expenses onto travelers without diminishing demand.
In the second quarter alone, United Airlines’ fuel spending surged by $2.3 billion, an 84% increase from the previous year. The airline managed to recover about 50% of the increased fuel costs in this quarter and projects to recover 80-90% of the current hike in the third quarter, aiming to fully compensate for the rise by the fourth quarter.
Looking ahead, United Airlines expects that the number of available seats in the fourth quarter will be lower than current published schedules. The airline is prepared to further reduce flights in the near future if fuel prices remain high.
