Two Romanian Climbers Found Dead in Italy’s Gran Paradiso Mountains

Two Romanian climbers tragically lost their lives in the Gran Paradiso massif, part of the Graian Alps in Italy. They had been missing since July 9, having fallen into a crevasse, and their bodies were recovered by Italian rescuers on July 13.

The climbers disappeared in the Gran Paradiso region, located between the Aosta Valley and the Piedmont regions in northwestern Italy, near the borders with France and Switzerland.

Tragic Accident: Climbers Fell 20 Meters into Crevasse

On July 9, the son of one of the climbers contacted authorities due to their prolonged absence, prompting search and rescue operations. Four days later, on July 13, rescuers located the crevasse where the two Romanians had fallen, approximately 20 meters deep, and were able to recover their bodies.

Reports indicate the bodies were discovered at an altitude of 3,700 meters, along the descent route, confirming the victims’ Romanian nationality.

According to data from news.ro, in 2025, 528 fatalities were reported among climbers in Italy, marking a 13% increase from the 466 deaths recorded in 2024.

Gran Paradiso, with its peak reaching 4,061 meters, is the seventh highest mountain in the Graian Alps and is located within the Gran Paradiso National Park. Its first ascent occurred on September 4, 1860, making it 166 years since the initial climb.

In a related incident, during the same timeframe as the tragedy in Gran Paradiso, two climbers were also found dead on the Swiss side of the Matterhorn.
