Swiss goalkeeper Yann Sommer, 37, is embarking on a new chapter in his career after leaving Inter Milan. The player, now a free agent, is poised to sign with Club Brugge, the reigning Belgian champions, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano, who confirmed the transfer with his signature phrase, “Here we go!”.
Sommer and Club Brugge have reached a complete agreement, and he is expected to sign a short-term contract. Despite receiving offers from Spain, Sommer chose Club Brugge, influenced by personal considerations and lifestyle preferences. At his new club, he is anticipated to be the undisputed starter.
Club Brugge Seeks Replacement for Simon Mignolet
The Belgian champions were on the lookout for an experienced goalkeeper following Simon Mignolet’s retirement, and Yann Sommer quickly became their primary target. Negotiations intensified over the past few days, culminating in a total agreement.
Sommer departed Inter Milan after the conclusion of the 2025-2026 season when his contract expired. During his three years in Milan, he won two Serie A titles and one Coppa Italia. He also played in the Champions League final in the 2024-2025 season, which was lost to PSG.
Throughout his tenure, Sommer made 139 appearances for Inter, keeping a clean sheet in 66 of those matches while conceding a total of 120 goals. Prior to his time at Inter, he played for FC Basel, Borussia Monchengladbach, and Bayern Munich. Additionally, he earned 94 caps for the Swiss national team before retiring.
At 37 years old, Yann Sommer is ready to defend the goal for the Belgian champions in the 2026-2027 season.
