Missile fired at Middle East base where 300 Italian soldiers are stationed

An Italian military base in Iraqi Kurdistan was hit by a missile overnight, but no casualties were reported, the Defense Ministry in Rome said on Thursday.
“A missile hit our base in Erbil. There are no casualties or injuries among Italian personnel. All are fine,” the ministry said on X shortly after midnight.
Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto was in constant contact with senior military commanders about the incident, the ministry added.
Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said in a separate message that Italian military personnel had taken shelter in a bunker and that they were all “safe and sound”.
Since the beginning of the war in the Middle East, the autonomous region of Kurdistan and its capital Erbil (north) have suffered multiple attacks attributed to pro-Iranian factions, most of which were neutralized by anti-aircraft defense, AFP notes.
Italy has about 300 soldiers in Erbil training Kurdish security forces, according to information published by the defense ministry on its website.
