Colombia Coach Analyzes World Cup Exit: ‘We Pay the Price’

Colombia faced a harsh disappointment in the World Cup, being eliminated in the Round of 16 by Switzerland. The match at BC Place Stadium in Vancouver ended in a goalless draw (0-0) after 120 minutes, with Switzerland winning 4-3 on penalties.
After the match, Colombian coach Nestor Lorenzo openly expressed his disappointment, stating that his team performed better but lacked efficiency in front of the goal—a factor that proved decisive.
Nestor Lorenzo on Switzerland vs. Colombia: ‘We Knew it Would Be a Tense Match’
“Without a doubt, we missed the goal. We knew it would be a very tense, tactical, and balanced match. However, I believe that, over 90 minutes, we deserved a little more given our chances and the shots we took,” Lorenzo said.
Colombia recorded 15 offensive actions during the match, compared to just 7 for Switzerland. Nevertheless, only 3 of those attempts were on target against goalkeeper Gregor Kobel.
The expected goals (xG) for Colombia stood at 1.18, while Switzerland managed only 0.35, highlighting the clearer scoring opportunities created by the South American side.
“But it wasn’t just about tactics. At first, we needed experience and the right mentality. As the match progressed, we managed to bring in the players we wanted for the penalty shootout execution. You always have a plan, and when it ultimately works, it is even more satisfying. Of course, we also had a bit of luck today, and that’s part of football,” he added.
