Belgium Dominates USA to Reach World Cup Quarterfinals with 4-1 Victory

Belgium confidently advanced to the quarterfinals of the World Cup by defeating the USA 4-1, eliminating the last host remaining in the tournament.
The knockout match of the 2026 World Cup kicked off more than 24 hours after FIFA lifted a red card suspension for American striker Balogun, following a controversial phone call from Trump to Infantino. This decision drew widespread criticism, and although Belgium appealed, their request was denied.
From the start of the match, Belgium, undeterred by the absence of stars like Kevin De Bruyne and Doku, dominated play. They created ample scoring opportunities, showcasing their prowess and determination.
Belgium’s Authoritative Dominance Despite Star Absences
The opening goal came in the 9th minute from De Ketelaere, and within the first 15 minutes, Belgium led 8-0 in shot attempts. USA struggled to find their rhythm, only managing to score a single goal when Tillman’s free-kick deflected past Courtois in the 31st minute. However, De Ketelaere quickly restored Belgium’s two-goal lead just two minutes later.
The USA’s disappointing evening continued in the second half, as goalkeeper Freese’s mishap allowed Vanaken to score easily from 25 meters out in the 57th minute. Captain Ream was unable to prevent the shot as Belgium extended their lead.
Balogun’s Performance Raises Questions
The Americans had few moments of spark, with Berhalter’s close shot hitting the crossbar in the 79th minute. Balogun, who had been largely absent for most of the game, attempted to prove his worth but struggled to make an impact.
Even with Doku and Lukaku entering in the 67th minute, Belgium managed to find the net again in stoppage time through their all-time leading scorer, solidifying their place in the quarterfinals against Spain, who have yet to concede a goal in this tournament.

Aspirations for USA’s First Quarterfinal Appearance in 24 Years
The team led by Mauricio Pochettino enjoyed one of their strongest World Cup campaigns in recent years. As one of the tournament’s hosts, the USA finished first in Group D with six points and advanced to the knockout stage after a 2-0 victory over Bosnia-Herzegovina.
The Americans aimed to reach the quarterfinals for the first time since 2002, having been eliminated in the round of 16 in 2010, 2014, and 2022.
Balogun’s Suspension Lifted Before Knockout Match
Just a day before the match, FIFA made a significant decision regarding Balogun’s availability. The striker had been suspended after receiving a red card in the victory over Bosnia-Herzegovina, but the penalty was rescinded, allowing him to play against Belgium.
Balogun had already scored three goals in this World Cup and was considered a key offensive player for Mauricio Pochettino, joined by Pulisic, Adams, and Dest. Meanwhile, McKenzie and Roldan faced uncertainty due to injuries.
Belgium came close to full strength, with only defender Zeno Debast’s absence due to injury being notable. De Bruyne, Doku, and Trossard were expected to start, while Lukaku, the hero of the comeback against Senegal, might again begin on the bench.
