Irina Begu Exits Wimbledon in First Round, Two Romanians Remain

Irina Begu, 35, currently ranked 211 in the WTA, faced a challenging match in the first round of Wimbledon, which runs from June 29 to July 12. Competing against one of the crowd favorites, 27-year-old Katie Swan, ranked 196, Begu was defeated in a tightly contested match, concluding with a score of 6-4, 6-4.
On Tuesday, three Romanian players took to the grass courts at the All England Club, with Begu being the first to compete. Despite her limited play over the past year, she started strong, winning her opening service game. However, the first set remained competitive until Swan managed to break in the ninth game, ultimately sealing the set after just over 30 minutes.
As the second set unfolded, Begu again began with a win on her serve but quickly fell behind as Swan broke back to lead 4-2, leaving Begu with little opportunity for comeback. Although Begu narrowed the gap to 4-5, Swan closed the match after a closely fought game where Begu saved four match points and had a break opportunity but ultimately succumbed, advancing Swan to the second round.
Match Summary: Begu vs. Swan
- Set 1: 4-6. Swan confirms her break and wins the first set.
- Set 2: 4-6. Despite saving multiple match points, Begu cannot turn the tide, with Swan taking the match with identical set scores of 6-4.
Following this defeat, Romania is left with two representatives in the tournament: Sorana Cîrstea, 36, ranked 18, and Gabriela Ruse, 28, ranked 105, both scheduled to play later that day.
