Ukraine Extends Dual Citizenship Agreement to Moldova

The Ukrainian government has officially included Moldova in its list of countries accepted for dual citizenship. This announcement was made by Ukraine’s Foreign Minister, Andrii Sibiga, via Telegram, describing the decision as a “strategic step for Ukraine towards Moldova.”
Sibiga stated, “This legal mechanism is now open to our neighbors – the citizens of the Republic of Moldova. For us, including Moldova in this list is not merely a formal expansion of geography; it is a logical step in developing relations with a country that shares a common border and a shared path towards the EU. A country that has been assisting our citizens and supporting Ukraine since the onset of the large-scale invasion.”
This measure follows a decree issued by the Kyiv government in May, which amended the list of states whose citizens can acquire Ukrainian citizenship through a simplified procedure. This list initially included 29 countries, including Romania.
Previously, the initial list comprised just five countries: Canada, Germany, Poland, the United States, and the Czech Republic. However, the legislative act from May expanded this to include Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, the United Kingdom, Greece, Denmark, Estonia, Ireland, Iceland, Spain, Italy, Cyprus, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Hungary, Finland, France, Croatia, Switzerland, and Sweden.
Under this legislation, Ukrainian citizens can obtain a second citizenship without having to renounce their Ukrainian nationality. Additionally, the law allows ethnic Ukrainians from these states to acquire Ukrainian citizenship through a simplified process.
