Hungarian Prime Minister Proposes Constitutional Amendment to Remove President Sulyok

Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar declared on Monday that his government will initiate the removal of President Tamas Sulyok through a constitutional amendment. He also stated that a constitutional reform will be introduced this autumn, as reported by MTI and Reuters.
“We will initiate the termination of the current president’s term as part of ‘Operation Purge.’ The day after the constitutional amendments take effect, Tamas Sulyok’s term will conclude, period,” Magyar asserted during a parliamentary speech.
Magyar emphasized that his administration will implement extensive legal, political, and economic measures aimed at eradicating corruption in Hungary.
The new constitution will be ratified through a referendum, and the Hungarian parliament will elect a new president to restore the authority of the office. “Hungary needs a constitution that the Hungarian people, regardless of political affiliation, can call their own,” he explained. According to Magyar, the constitution must outlast governments, parties, and prime ministers.
Additionally, legislative changes will set a maximum age limit of 70 years for judges of the Constitutional Court, resulting in the removal of Peter Polt from his presidency of the court.
The maximum term length for parliamentarians will also be established at 12 years.
The government aims to liberate citizens from the political and economic mafia that has plundered the country, threatened its citizens, and made life unbearable, the Prime Minister emphasized. He stated that decisive and strict measures are necessary in every domain.
Reflecting on Italy’s anti-mafia struggle, Magyar recalled how the assassination of a judge and a prosecutor shocked the Italian nation 34 years ago, leading to the conclusion that organized crime cannot be defeated through traditional methods. “This led to new laws and institutions in 1992,” he continued.
“However, there is a crucial difference compared to Italy. We will not allow Hungarian society to endure the kind of shocks that Italy has suffered, nor will we permit the mafia to choke, suffocate, and rob Hungary in the decades to come,” highlighted the Hungarian Prime Minister.
