Ukrainian Energy Market Faces Debt Crisis Amid Legislative Inaction

According to expert Vitaliy Riabtsev, the resolution of the debt crisis within Ukraine’s energy market necessitates legislative changes that have yet to be initiated by the government or examined by Parliament.
He emphasized that the state previously committed to resolving the debt issue in the energy sector, yet current debts on the balancing market have surpassed 40 billion UAH.
“Specifically, there are over 40 billion in debts in the balancing electricity market,” Riabtsev stated.
The expert pointed out that market participants do not have sufficient capacities to tackle this issue independently, thus requiring state-level solutions. He indicated that the resolution depends on coordinated actions between the government and Parliament.
“Clearly, business entities cannot solve this problem on their own. It needs to be addressed at the Cabinet and Parliament level, but there has been a delay,” he asserted.
Riabtsev warned that continued delays will exacerbate financial pressures on energy companies, putting the electricity market at risk.
