2 tbsp. spoons into water – and the carrots are sweet, large, smooth: how to feed root vegetables without chemicals

Carrots grow in almost every garden, but not everyone produces large, smooth and sweet root vegetables. Baking soda is a simple folk remedy that helps improve growth and protect carrots from problems.

Agronomist Ksenia Davydova told how to use it in garden beds without harming the crop.

How does baking soda affect carrots?

Soda works in three ways. First, it neutralizes acidic soil. In acidic soil, root vegetables become smaller, distorted and lose their taste. Secondly, soda acts as a mild antiseptic – it reduces the risk of phomosis and white rot. Thirdly, it repels the carrot fly: the smell and taste of soda prevent the pest from finding the garden bed.

How to use baking soda at different stages

Before sowing. 2-3 weeks before sowing, sprinkle 1-2 tbsp. spoons of soda per square meter and embed shallowly into the ground. The method is for local areas, and not for the entire garden.

Seed treatment. Soak the seeds for 12–24 hours in a solution: 1 teaspoon of soda per 1 liter of warm water. This disinfects, speeds up germination and improves immunity. After soaking, rinse and dry.

Watering during the growth period. Dilute 2 tbsp. spoons of soda per 10 liters of water. Water once every 2-3 weeks, being careful not to water on the leaves. This maintains the pH and prevents root rot.

Spraying against pests. To the same solution (2 spoons per 10 liters) add 1 spoon of liquid soap for adhesion. Treat in the evening, in dry weather, especially the lower part of the leaves. The first time is when 3-4 leaves appear, then every 10-14 days.

When is soda bad for you?

Baking soda is not suitable for alkaline soils – it will cause chlorosis. Do not exceed the dosage: excess upsets the nutritional balance and can burn the roots. Do not spray in hot weather – the solution on the leaves will cause burns,” the specialist explained.

Personal experience

My carrots always grew crooked and small. I checked the acidity – it turned out to be pH 5.5. I added 2 tablespoons of baking soda a month before sowing. A month after germination, I sprayed it with a soda solution and soap. Result: root vegetables are smooth, large and sweet, without wormholes. Now baking soda is my must-have step.

Conclusion

Soda is an affordable and safe assistant for carrots, if used in moderation. It neutralizes acid, repels carrot flies and fights fungi. But only on suitable soil and in conjunction with crop rotation, watering and thinning. Too much soda is worse than no soda.
