In Mexico City (Mexico), on June 11, at one of the largest stadiums in the world, Azteca, the official opening ceremony of the 2026 FIFA World Cup took place. This was reported by a correspondent of the GORDON publication.
The ceremony was decorated with a large-scale fireworks show, as well as spectacular costumes of the performers with elements of indigenous culture.
For the first time this year, the largest football event in the world is taking place in three countries at once: Mexico, the USA and Canada. The first match of the championship at the stadium will be played by the teams of Mexico and South Africa (RSA).
On June 12, before the first matches, Toronto (Canada) and Los Angeles (USA) will hold their opening ceremonies.
Media reported that US President Donald Trump will miss the first match of the American team at the World Cup.
The tournament will be held in a new format for the first time: 48 national teams will take part in the final part (16 more than usual). Ukraine did not qualify for the finals. It will last until July 19.
