Czech Defense Minister Jaromir Zuna said on June 9 that the Czech Republic is ready to further coordinate the initiative to purchase ammunition for Ukraine. He was quoted by České Noviny (ČTK).
Zuna made his statement after meeting his German counterpart Boris Pistorius in Berlin.
According to an Ukrinform correspondent, the head of the Czech defense department assured of the Czech Republic’s readiness to continue to participate in strengthening NATO’s eastern flank, in particular, with its presence in Latvia, Lithuania, Slovakia and Poland. However, he did not deny information about Prague’s plans to reduce its quantitative presence in these countries from 2000 to 1600, assuring that this “will not affect their commitment and effectiveness.”
Zuna called Germany a strategic partner of the Czech Republic in the field of defense and security and pointed to its key role in protecting Europe. In particular, as a supplier of military equipment and ammunition.
Pistorius, for his part, announced that Germany would contribute €300 million to the Czech initiative. This will allow the purchase of approximately 50 thousand ammunition for Ukraine. Pistorius noted that he considers the project an important support mechanism and thanked the Czech Republic for continuing to coordinate it.
