Even a healthy plant in the store can get sick and wither in your home. According to an expert from the Zen channel “Exotica – an encyclopedia of house plants”, it is all due to a combination of three negative factors – cold, dampness and stress.
Usually in such cases the plant exhibits several symptoms at once. For example, its leaves become limp and soft (and the lower ones turn yellow), the soil is constantly waterlogged, and watery, darkened areas appear on the stem. Even if you provide the plant with first-class care, it still gets worse day by day.
First aid for the plant
First you will have to stop watering. If a plant is weakened by cold, it means its roots can no longer take in water. Continue to water it and rot will occur.
Place the pot with the plant in a warm place – the temperature should be 20-25 °C. There should be no drafts, air conditioners or sudden temperature changes nearby.
Make sure the roots are not rotten. If they are elastic, dense and light – everything is in order. And if you take the plant out of the pot and see that the roots have darkened, softened and smell bad, you will have to remove all the damaged areas with a sterile instrument.
Transplant the plant into airy soil. Add perlite, charcoal or bark to the soil. If the roots breathe, the plant will recover much faster.
That's all – the plant itself will do the rest of the work. During its recovery period, do not get carried away with fertilizing and fertilizers, as they risk causing stress and burns to the roots.
