BAT Romania marks World Environment Day with important advances in water management and a firm commitment to protect the environment

On the occasion of World Environment Day, celebrated annually on June 5, BAT Romania reaffirms its commitment to protecting the environment, supported by the significant progress made in the responsible management of resources. These results reflect how innovation, responsibility and collective involvement can generate a positive and sustainable impact on the environment.
In October 2025, the BAT factory in Ploiesti was successfully recertified according to the Alliance for Water Stewardship (AWS) standard. The audit established full compliance with all requirements, with no non-conformities identified, denoting an outstanding result and BAT's consistent performance in meeting its commitment to responsible resource management. All five BAT plants in the South East Europe Area currently hold AWS certification, reflecting a regional commitment to the highest standards in responsible water management.
In achieving its goal of creating a better future – A Better Tomorrow™, BAT focuses on clear targets for reducing emissions, protecting natural resources, integrating responsible practices regarding product circularity and generating a positive impact in the community. BAT integrates sustainability into all aspects of the company's business, using it as a strategic engine that sustains performance, strengthens resilience and enables long-term growth.
At the local level, this commitment is reflected in sustained investments in advanced technologies, collaborations with external partners to identify and implement effective solutions for responsible resource management, and in annual awareness campaigns. As environmental challenges become more complex, achieving environmental goals requires coordinated efforts by companies, authorities and communities alike.
Ileana Dumitru, Director for Foreign Affairs of the Southeast Europe Area within BAT, said: “On World Environment Day, we remind ourselves that protecting natural resources is both a strategic goal and a shared responsibility. At BAT, we invest in technology and innovation for concrete results in protecting the environment, but we also know that the real impact is also generated by the everyday actions of each of us. Both at work and in the communities we are part of, we can all contribute to reducing waste, using resources responsibly and contributing to a brighter future Achieving environmental protection objectives requires concrete measures, open dialogue and a consistent approach at all levels.”
Beyond operational efforts, the company constantly develops information programs to encourage the involvement of employees and commercial partners in actions to protect the environment and the responsible use of resources, reminding that sustainability is a shared responsibility. With the arrival of the summer season, BAT Romania runs awareness campaigns that encourage simple gestures that can, together, have a significant impact. Whether we're on holiday, at the beach or at festivals, each of us can help protect the environment by reducing single-use plastic consumption, collecting and disposing of waste correctly, saving water and respecting natural spaces.
On World Environment Day, BAT emphasizes that achieving environmental goals requires sustained efforts, innovation and collaboration, as well as a shared commitment that can protect the environment today for a better future tomorrow.
About BAT's climate objectives
Targets for 2030:
- 60% absolute reduction of Goal 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 2030 (compared to the 2020 baseline)
- 30.3% reduction in Goal 3 emissions from the FLAG category (forests, land and agriculture) (compared to the 2020 baseline)
- 42% reduction in industrial (non-FLAG) Goal 3 emissions (compared to 2020 baseline)
- over 50% of the energy used in its own operations to come from sources with low carbon emissions
The Group's climate change initiatives are guided by the Low Carbon Economy Transition Plan and the Group's environmental policy, underpinned by the Climate Change and Energy Standard. The current science-based targets for 2030 and 2050 are aligned to a scenario of limiting global warming to 1.5°C and are supported by a broad set of commitments in areas such as energy, waste, water and biodiversity.
The Plan to Net Zero
Reducing Aim 1 and 2 emissions
- Development of site-specific decarbonisation plans, including process optimization and investment in energy efficiency projects
- Use of renewable energy through power purchase agreements (PPAs) and on-site renewable energy generation
- Expanding the use of electric and hybrid vehicles in the fleet
Reducing emissions Goal 3
- Implementation of regenerative agriculture practices
- Integration of eco-design principles in products from new categories

About the BAT factory in Ploiesti
In 2025, the BAT factory managed to recover and recycle more than 21,000 m³ of water in industrial processes, while reducing water consumption by more than 7,000 m³. Our commitment is to maintain AWS certification and continuously improve water management performance in our community by:
- continuing investments in innovative solutions and technologies,
- developing collaborations at local and national level to identify and promote best practices in responsible water management,
- continuing to organize awareness campaigns on the importance of efficient and responsible water use.
The BAT factory in Ploiești is the second largest of the group at European level. Since the beginning of construction, in 1996, more than 500 million euros have been invested in its development and modernization, being today one of the main producers of the group of tobacco products and consumables for glo, the company's device for heating tobacco. Approximately 70% of the BAT factory's production in Ploiesti is exported to countries around the world, thus contributing significantly to Romania's trade balance.
