Kelemen Hunor, signal that the UDMR maintains its firm position towards a government led by Tomac

The leader of the UDMR, Kelemen Hunor, stated on Thursday that his party will probably make a decision towards the end of next week regarding the vote in the Parliament regarding the government formula that the designated prime minister will announce.
The declarations of the UDMR president came shortly after the president Nicușor Dan proposed Eugen Tomac for the position of candidate for the formation of the new government.
“I saw that Mr. Tomac was appointed by the president to form a government, we are waiting to see what list of ministers he will make, who will be the ministers and the government program and, of course, we are waiting for discussions, if Mr. Tomac wants. Yesterday I had a telephone conversation with Mr. Tomac, very short, I did not go into details, it remained as after the appointment to talk. Of course, when he wants, we are available, he we are listening to see what are the intentions, what is the government program, who are the proposed ministers and after that we will make a decision”, declared Kelemen Hunor in front of the press, in Bălăușeri.
“Probably next week, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, we are not in a hurry, depending on when the list will be presented and the program will be presented in the Parliament. Before that we will make a decision. I do not rule out making the decision only the next weekend,” added the UDMR leader, according to Agerpres.
Kelemen Hunor maintains his position against Tomac
Asked if he maintains his statement that the Tomac variant would not be a solution, not even a breakdown, Kelemen Hunor stated that he has not changed his position.
“At this moment, I support what I stated because I have no argument and I have no reason to believe that what I said yesterday, the day before yesterday, is not valid. Eugen Tomac is the president of an extra-parliamentary party. I understand that today he resigned as president of the PMP, but that does not change his situation in any way. An extra-parliamentary party, which in 2024 missed entering the Parliament, on the one hand. On the other hand, it is certain that a a technocrat government will have a difficult and short life, because the vast majority of parliamentarians or perhaps all political formations will enter the opposition the day after the inauguration of the government, and then it will be very, very difficult to bring draft laws, to have a majority. It will not be easy. So a technocrat government, with a little time, can work”, he pointed out, referring to the Cioloș government as an example 2015-2016.
“A technocratic government is not a solution”
In the opinion of the president of UDRM, a technocratic government helps those in the opposition to grow and that is why “everyone will enter the opposition because they want to grow, but first of all AUR will grow for sure”.
“So another reason why a technocrat government, from my point of view, is not a good solution, it's an emergency solution after you tried to form political governments and it didn't work out. Then yes, that's my point of view, but surely, until we discuss, we don't see what the intentions are, who the ministers are, because we don't know the list at the moment, it's hard to say and find arguments for a vote”, argued Kelemen Hunor, who also added that he is convinced that Romania will not reach early elections.
Nicușor Dan “can also come with the third attempt”
The UMDR leader also emphasized that the president has no constitutional obligation to dissolve Parliament even after the second attempt to form a new government.
“He can come with the third attempt, because in the Constitution it is written that after 60 days, after two attempts, he can dissolve. So there can be three, four attempts in 60 days and it is still not a constitutional political obligation for the president to dissolve the Parliament. We will see”, concluded Kelemen Hunor.
What government will Tomac propose?
On Thursday, the head of state appointed EU parliamentarian Eugen Tomac for the position of prime minister.
Eugen Tomac declared, at the Cotroceni Palace, that he will propose to the Legislature “a team of specialists”, and not politicians.
“I wish to find openness and a sincere dialogue on the part of all democratic and pro-Western political forces in the Parliament, in order to invest a government that will have only one agenda: the common good of the citizens of Romania. I understand the political stakes, they are legitimate and natural in a democratic state, but I know that Romania now needs national projects carried out to the end and clear objectives, that is why I will present to the Romanian Parliament a team of specialists, a technical government, not a political one”, said Tomac.
According to the Constitution, the candidate for the position of prime minister will request, within 10 days from the appointment, the vote of confidence of the Parliament on the program and the entire list of the Government.
The Government's program and list are debated by the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate, in a joint session. The Parliament gives confidence to the Government with the vote of the majority of deputies and senators.
